If you have people working for you, the focus is always on you. Therefore, you need to become a effective boss who will be liked and be admired by your own employees and likely inspire them to work harder. Furthermore, if you are a good boss you can also help the employees to build a good career. So, if you are an employer who wants to become an effective and good boss to your employees, here are the five things you can do to become one.
Be Professional. Be Casual
A good boss can shout hard at his employees, then turn around and pat them on the back and get the job done.
Balancing between being strict and casual is key.
To make your employees feel comfortable, relaxed, and avoid talking and/or thinking negative things about you, maintain your professionalism. Your job here is not to become their best friend. If you will become too close with them, it will just lead to problems because they see you as one of their peers or friends and not as a boss. But again, there shouldnt be so much distance that they cant come to you for their issues.
Be Approachable
There are lot of employees who are afraid to approach their boss when it comes to some issue and problems or even afraid to ask questions. Therefore, ensure to yourself that you are approachable in times when they have some questions to ask and will come to you directly to ask for some help. Though it may distract you from your work, it will help you prevent big problems in the future.
Practice before preaching
Since you are the boss of your company, you are required to perform your duties and responsibilities that will contribute to the success of the company or the projects you have. Discipline should come from the top of the order chain. As they say “Practice before you preach”, therefore you need to ensure that you can update your team, set meetings, and delegate the work effectively.
Do Not Micromanage
Delegate as much as possible, and give the employee the ownership of the delegated problem as a whole. If you provide some space for your employees, it will help them to do their work effectively. They will know that you trust their abilities and at the same time, you are providing them some time to improve their skills and help them grow and succeed in their work.
Lead. Encourage and Be Humble
To become a good boss of your own company, you need to ensure that you possess the good qualities of a good leader such as becoming committed to your work and showing real humility. This will help your employees to feel free in accepting your ideas and appreciate your efforts. You can correct their works sometimes but ensure that you show to them that you like their work and you greatly appreciate it. This will help you make your employees to become loyal to you as well as to your company.
